Having previously worked in catering at Middlesbrough Football Club and local schools, Nicola Finn joined Roseleigh 14 years ago..
She appreciates how important food is to the residents and is part of a close-knit team that prepare breakfast, lunch, teas and supper, 365 days a year.
“On Christmas Day I was here from 7am-2pm. First to do the breakfast and then Christmas Dinner – beef and turkey with all the trimmings,” said Nicola. “We wanted to ensure the residents had a special day and it was very rewarding to see how much they enjoyed it.”
Nicola prepares porridge, cereals and a cooked breakfast for the 50 residents everyday, then helps with the clean up before starting work on lunch. Covid restrictions permitting, it’s a time to have a chat with residents while working and get to know their food favourites.
The lunch menu changes every day covering favourites such as chili con carne, shepherds pie, lasagne, quiche and egg and chips and a wide range of cold meat and other sandwiches. There’s also a varied choice of pudding.
“We are careful to check if residents have any food allergies and will adapt their menu to cater for that as well as any requirements such as vegetarian or halal meals” said Nicola.
The menu changes every season with meals prepared in house with ingredients sourced locally where possible.
The latest report by the Care Quality Commission noted how Inspectors received positive feedback from residents and their families about the quality and variety of food provided and how Roseleigh strived to provide a balanced diet for residents and effectively monitor and help those suffering malnutrition.
“I moved to Roseleigh because it offered more hours. It’s ideal because my son’s primary school is close by so after my shift I can pick him up and we can spend time together,” said Nicola, 43.
“I enjoy my job. It’s a great place to work and you have great job satisfaction in knowing you have brightened up the day for the residents and they have eaten well.”
