Activity Coordinator

Sam Stuckey is taking inspiration from her own painful experience to help residents in her role as Activity Coordinator at Lilibet Manor.

A long-standing chronic back problem caused Sam to take medical retirement from her job as an engineer for Royal Mail but rather than this being a negative, she is turning it into a positive for the benefit of our residents.

She explains: “Given the issues with my back I have learned a lot about rehabilitation of injuries and taken various courses and gained qualifications which have helped me to manage my own pain.

“This included learning about exercise for older adults and becoming a qualified Pilates instructor.

“So, when the opportunity came up at Lilibet Manor even thought it was something completely new to me, I knew I could bring a lot of my personal experience to help me in the role.”

Sam, whose previous roles have also included working in the Televisions Rights department at Granada TV which involved processing payments for celebrities when the shows they appeared in were show overseas, has been tasked with overhauling the activities programme for residents at Lilibet Manor.

So far this has included introducing activities such as musical bingo, Pilates, and leaf painting.

Sam says: “My plan is to try as many things as I can so the residents get a varied programme of activities and from that I can see what works particularly well for them and what they enjoy the most

“Ultimately, the choice of activities needs to be made by them, but I think there is scope for doing things which are a little different, for example using virtual reality as part of reminiscence.

“And as a keen archer who has competed at a high-level, I am keen to look at introducing something like this as well as this is a good example of a sport which can be done by everyone, including those in wheelchairs.

“It is still early days but I am excited about being able to put my own stamp on this role for the benefits of residents at Lilibet Manor.”
