Cost of living crisis

Whether it’s energy bills, council tax increases, paying more at the pump or your shopping, the country faces a cost of living crisis in which prices are rising at a rate not seen for half a century.

Whilst we will all feel the impact of this, and even with the Government bowing to public pressure and providing financial support, the likelihood is that those in the poorest households will be most severely affected and that includes many elderly and vulnerable adults.

One man who has constantly warned of the impending cost of living crisis and put forward suggestions of action that households can take to try to reduce the impact is the money saving expert Martin Lewis.

You may have seen him on the Martin Lewis Money Show or other TV and radio slots, or read his articles in newspapers and online.

Martin and his team have carried out an extensive survey asking people to send in their money saving tips and he’s now published the best 90 suggestions in a cost of living survival guide.

The guide includes one off tips from the public as well as Martin’s advice on switching providers to save cash and also how people can ensure they are getting benefits they are entitled to

One woman who works from home told how she has invested in a heated blanket to use at her desk rather than put the central heating on – it costs just 4p a day. Another contributor told how switching from liquid soap to a bar of soap halves the cost of staying clean.

There is lots of advice for the elderly Including how to ensure you don’t miss out on state pension top-up worth thousands of pounds a year, how to cut the cost of prescriptions and how to check if you’re eligible for low income support such as the low cost broadband social tariff or the household social funds that all councils have.

You can find the full guide on Martin’s Money Saving Expert website. It also includes 42 money saving household hacks (including how to get the last bit of toothpaste from the tube) and 25 tips to stop spending (do you need all those subscriptions for example?)

You’ll also be able to sign up for Martin’s free weekly newsletter and be able to share any money saving tips of your own.
