Makenzie McGeough may have been the youngest Care Assistant at Queen’s Lodge, but it’s given her the perfect springboard for her future career.
She spent two years studying health and social care at college and worked at the home from the age of 16 at weekends and holidays, gaining valuable on-the-job experience.
That’s stood her in great stead because, now aged 18, she left the home recently to begin a three-year degree at university, with the ultimate aim of becoming a paramedic.
So, Mackenzie is a great example of how working care from a young age can lead to other things and whilst everyone at Queen’s Lodge will miss her (although she will still be working here during the holidays and at weekends), we are proud of the part we have played in helping her along her future career path.
“I really enjoyed my two years working at Queen’s Lodge as I learned so much during this time,” she says.
“And I know what I have learned, and what I will continue to learn, will stand me in good stead during my course and hopefully when I eventually become a Paramedic.”
Mackenzie says one of the best things about working at Queen’s Lodge is the friendliness of the staff and residents.
“I would definitely recommend anyone already in care or coming into care for the first time to work at Queen’s Lodge,” she says.
“I started when I was 16 so it was a little shock to the system at first getting to understand the different needs people living in the home have, such as dementia, but you get used to it and it’s a very rewarding job.”
When she’s not working, and studying, Mackenzie enjoys spending time with her family and friends and socialising.
