Sometimes, the best friendships begin when you least expect them. For Ian and Stephen, it all started with a game of chess at Roseleigh Care Home.
Ian first came to Roseleigh for a few weeks of respite care following a hospital stay. During his time at the home, he had no idea that fellow resident Stephen shared his interest in chess. It wasn’t until Ian’s very last day that he discovered Stephen’s talent for the game.
The pair spent the afternoon playing chess together, and Ian enjoyed it so much that he asked if he could come back to play again and that’s exactly what he’s been doing ever since!
A weekly tradition built on friendship
Now back in his own home, Ian visits Roseleigh every week to meet up with Stephen, who still lives at the home, for a friendly game of chess.
The pair typically play five or six games during each visit, enjoying a bit of competition, a good catch-up and some time together doing something they both love.
Ian says “it’s nice to get out of the house” with the visit providing a welcome opportunity to enjoy a regular activity with a friend.
A champion opponent!
Stephen brings some impressive experience to their games, having been crowned Middlesbrough Chess Champion in 1996. But that doesn’t stop Ian winning a game or two!
The weekly chess sessions have become a simple but meaningful part of both their routines, offering friendship, conversation and a few hours of enjoyable competition.
The little things that make a big difference
What began as an unexpected discovery on Ian’s last day at Roseleigh has become a much-loved weekly tradition.
Their story is a lovely reminder of how shared interests can bring people together, create lasting friendships and give us something to look forward to.
For Ian and Stephen, it’s a few games of chess each week. But it’s also time spent in good company, a reason to get out and about, and a friendship that has continued long after Ian’s stay at Roseleigh came to an end.
