The best thing I have ever done

A few years ago, Jamie McKie was working in a warehouse packing boxes and feeling very unfulfilled – but now she is at Queen’s Lodge and says it’s “the best thing I have ever done”.

Her sister was working at Queen’s Lodge at the time and suggested she apply for a job as a Care Assistant, and she joined the home in August 2022

“It’s so much better than working in a warehouse,” says Jamie.

“It’s fun, never boring, and every day is different.”

Jamie’s role has expanded at Queen’s Lodge because she has also become our LGBTQ+ Champion at Queen’s Lodge.

This role is all about celebrating diversity and one of the first events connected with this was our Pride Day in June, which coincided with Pride Month.

“It was a big success with our residents, families and staff all taking part,” says Jamie.

“We live in an area which is very diverse so it’s nice to be able to introduce thus into the home, but in a fun way.”

Jamie was also responsible for bringing in some weird and wonderful creatures into the home recently, namely her ‘pet’ Giant African Land Snail, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and a Sun Beetle.

“Collecting them has become a hobby of mine but I also have a cat as a pet too,” jokes Jamie.
