The best thing

Kendra Kane spent 25 years working in the kitchen of a bingo club before coming to Roseleigh and, two years later, she says it’s the best thing she did.

Working long hours and often cooking for people at 10pm at night had started to take its toll on her.

“The bingo club has started to become more like a nightclub and with my children having left home I decided I had enough and wanted to make more time for myself,” she explains.

Kendra saw a job advertised for a Kitchen Assistant at Roseleigh and when she hadn’t heard anything she initially thought she had been unsuccessful.

But Kendra is nothing if not determined and knowing our Regional Manager Julie through her mum, she persisted and ended up being successful at interview.

She is now part of a kitchen team of five responsible for ensuring our residents are well-fed and hydrated throughout the day.

“It’s such a varied job, one minute I can be making toast for breakfast, the next I am washing pots and then I can be making milkshakes for those residents who need a little more fortification,” she says.

“It’s so much better than working at the bingo club because here you feel like you are making a difference.

“The residents are so appreciative of what we do, and I love talking to them and listening to their stories.

“I have learned so much and I only wish I had come here sooner!”

When she’s not working, Kendra enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren, who keep her very busy!
